Street Style

Not sure what is in the offing but the Gulf news has run strange article on the street prostitution scene in Dubai.

This is one of the things that people find strangest about Dubai, most westerners find it bizarre that such a highly visible trade is carried out in broad daylight.
And it is blatant, this pic was taken from the window of the old Weasel Apt, there are 6 girls working this street at 3pm.

Now I have often thought that a little street life was a sign of a growing up city but several years of living in East Berlin by the sea (Golden sands area) showed that it can be a total pain.

But what the article fails to mention is that it isn't so much the girls that are the issue but the creepy customers who kerb crawl 24 hours a day harassing any woman foolish enough to be on the streets.

In this male dominated city there probably is a case for allowing some pros to work but they seriously should take them off the streets especially in residential areas.

Surely it can't be that hard, a couple of plain clothes cop cars, you could use white landcruisers with blacked windows (the most common crawling car) , would clear this lot in a day but for years this does not appear to have been a priority. Posted by Picasa

The police are too busy protecting them to start harassing them. Ever think that this was vital for Dubais sucess and it was simply allowed?

You are right on the money. I live in Abu Dhabi, and while the prostitution scene is not quite as obvious out here, it seems 98% of the men of the city fall under the category you've mentionned.
If you are female and not covered from head to toe and dare to venture out to the streets, expect a "how much" and cars slowing down past you, waiting for you to come up to them.

I've always said... in every big city lies a corner where men can go find these women. Out here, they are everywhere. Bars, restaurants, streets. Sadly, the rest of the female population is lumped into the same category.

Woman: dare to be out on the streets, and I can guarantee you, you will be mistaken for one of them.
All we can do is ignore ignore ignore.
But please, someone teach these men to make out the differences!

PS: It's "Gulf News, not "the Gulf News"

I was asked 'how much' when walking down the street with a double stroller with 2 babies inside.....Kuwaiti plates with 3 guys inside. Where did they expect me to leave the kids while I entertained them?

On another occasion while 6 months pregnant I was walking to a hotel with another woman for dinner (a 2 minute walk) and was 'ordered' into a car...we continued walking...and he continued to shout, calling us every name under the sun...fortunately he was in his company car with a big logo...by the end of the evening this man found out there was a nice little cell with his name on it in Al Rifa police station. He spent the night begging for forgiveness, in fear that his family would find out. Needless to say he got knocked around a bit and had a 3 day rest in the slammer.

No hope for women in this city. You can have 2 heads and they still wana have their way with you. Wearing a hijab will bring you little respite from the curb crawlers.
The answer is clearly to go after the buyers...and we could do with their photos in the papers.
